EXPEDITED ROUTE Closing in May

Register Now if you qualify!

April 14, 2021
Dear Donna,

There is a lot of information in this newsletter, if you have any questions please contact the office for clarification.

EXPEDITED ROUTE

Qualified practitioners will possess an approved certification from The Child and Youth Care Association of Alberta. They will also have a minimum of 750 currency hours in the 3 years prior to applying, and 450 direct client hours over their career. For information on becoming Certified please go here and follow the Certification process that best fits you.

https://www.cycaa.com/certification/the-certification-process/

Certified Child and Youth Care Counsellors with recognized certifications, can apply to ACTA prior to the expedited route closing, will become the first regulated members of CCTA. Expedited Route is closing May 31, 2021!

If you are currently a Certified Member of the CYCAA you should Register now under the Expedited Route as it will be easier and is discounted for Certified Members. If you hold a diploma or degree in Child and Youth Care in Alberta, and have the appropriate hours, you can qualify for Certification with The CYCAA and then Register in the Expedited Route of ACTA. You have to act fast though. Apply here for the Expedited Route https://www.acta-alberta.ca/registration. The Intermediate Route opens as soon as the Expedited Route closes. This will give folks who were not able to get Certified a way to Register with ACTA (which becomes the College of Counselling Therapists of Alberta – CCTA).

INTERMEDIATE ROUTE

The Intermediate Route will be available to all practitioners currently working in the field who did not apply through the Expedited Route. It may also include some practitioners who have started the Certification process but did not receive their certification prior to the closing of the Expedited Route window.

It is important to remember that continuity in the workforce is considered a priority for both the government and the profession. It is essential that the public does not lose access to qualified mental health professionals, and that qualified competent practitioners in the field have a process by which to enter the College.

Applications for the Intermediate Route may be made to the CCTA within the first two years after the College is proclaimed. ACTA is exploring the possibility of opening the Intermediate Route before proclamation; please stay tuned.

The specific educational, training, supervision and examination requirements for this route have been recommended by ACTA and will be finalized when the regulation is approved. Watch for the details to come out soon!

The full criteria for Intermediate Route will be made available shortly, prior to the College opening, so that individuals have time to prepare their applications to demonstrate that they meet the entry-to-practice competencies. The College will consider any education, training, and experience that supports a practitioner’s application.

To qualify for Intermediate Route, practitioners will have a minimum of 750 currency hours in the 3 years prior to applying, and 450 direct client hours over their career. Applicants must pass a jurisprudence exam, either upon entry to the College or within the first year of membership to the College. This decision will be made closer to the date of the College opening.

For those who did not register under the Expedited Route or the Intermediate Route, and for those who will be coming out of post-secondary education they will register through the Regular Route. The Regular Route will remain open always for new Child and Youth Care Counsellors.

REGULAR ROUTE

The specific educational, training, supervision and examination requirements for this route have been recommended by ACTA. These entry-to-practice requirements will be finalized after Cabinet approves the regulation – likely Spring Session.

VACCINE ELIGIBILITY – Phase 2C

Most Child and Youth Care Counsellors are now eligible to get their vaccine under Phase 2C of the Vaccine rollout. Alberta Health Services will offer the vaccine to groups who are at high risk of experiencing severe outcomes, and Albertans who regularly come into contact with them.
  • Phase 2C will offer the vaccine to: Residents and staff linked to eligible congregate living settings: correctional facilities, homeless shelters, meatpacking plants, group homes including disability, mental health and other types of licensed supportive living.
    • Health-care workers providing direct and acute patient care who have a high potential for spread to high-risk individuals.
    • Caregivers of Albertans who are most at risk of severe outcomes.
  • Workers eligible in this phase will need to provide personal identification that contains a birth date and proof of employment or professional registration (i.e., employee ID card, letter of employment or placement) when booking or attending their appointments with Alberta Health Services or at community pharmacies.
Further information can be found at https://www.alberta.ca/covid19-vaccine.aspx or the Government of Albert COVID 2C handout.
